Many nurses have asked me about the opportunities to travel and perhaps take a working vacation while Nursing in the UK and what their ability would be to get Licenses and Visa's to work there. In Jan 2006 I visited with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council in London and was provided with an NMC document for you to view. From the beginning please be aware that only a 3 year program or longer graduate with a minimum 4600 hour program can obtain a UK license and generally you can only apply for the Adult nursing part of the nursing register since Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Midwifery have specific program requirements that almost all nurses in the USA and Canada could not meet! Minimum hours of training for acceptance into the Adult Nursing part of the register have been set as follows; 33% of your nursing program (1533 hours) must be theory and at least 50% (2300 hours) must be clinical. Hours spent on any non-nursing topics are not included in the program hours accepted by them. An english language test (the IELTS) is required for ALL adult nursing register applicants and must be completed before applying to the NMC, even if you were educated in english. Full details of the requirements are on the document linked below. Midwives educated in Canada however should be able to get registration on the Midwives part of the register as long as their training equals the EEA/UK minimum training requirements of 156 weeks of full time study which is 50% theory and 50% clinical. If you were educated in english and are applying for the Midwives register the language test does not seem to be required. You must have been over 17 years 6 months before starting either program.

This will not be an easy process for most nurses. It takes around 6 months to obtain license approval and you must complete a 20 day Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) in the UK and may also be required to complete a period of supervised practice at an approved educational institution. After making an application you have two years to meet the requirements or lose your application fees and have to start all over again. The cost of completing the 20 day ONP at Bournemouth University is currently 250 pounds, The university would supply an acceptance letter offering a place in the program which would be given to the British consulate to apply for a student visa for the time spent in the UK studying.

After reading all of this I would think that the effort to get a UK license is beyond what most of you would be willing to do for a working vacation, and certainly is not an ideal situation for a travel nurse looking for a short assignment, However for anyone thinking about moving to the UK for a long period of time, this information would still be very useful which is why I have presented it to you. It is no wonder that in a press release issued on March 6, 2006 in regard to the expected license fee increases the NMC states in part "The fall in new recruitment in the NHS having in turn led to a collapse in numbers of oveeseas-trained nurses and midwives seeking registration. This is projected to lead to an anticipated loss for the NMC of 9 million pounds over the next three years." Many British commonwealth nurses have in the past visited and worked in the UK but under the new stringent rules that came into being in 2005 those numbers are obviously dropping.

The below companies recruit and offer visa sponsership and employment for overseas nurses that wish to come to the USA to practice. This list is definately not complete there are many others! Most if not all offer Green cards ( including for your spouse and under 21 year old dependant children), NCLEX and CGFNS preparation, assistance obtaining Licensure, Visa applications, and Clinical internships upon arrival in the USA as well as job placement. Many offer reimbursement of your expenditures in passing the exams, obtaining the visas and getting to the USA. All require a long term contract in return for assisting you to come to the USA (12 - 36 months). Some will offer only short term housing. Your pay may also, in some cases, be lower than that of your American counterparts allowing the companies to recoup some of the money they spend on your behalf in getting your License as well as Visa's and getting to the USA.
